CITY TO DISCUSS BUDGET NEXT WEEK

The Brenham City Council has scheduled a series of budget workshops for next week.

City Manager Terry Roberts

Among the items to be discusses will be the possible issuance of debt to help pay for flood damage repairs.

According to City Manager Terry Roberts, the council will discuss over six-million-dollars in needed repairs due to the May 2016 flooding.

Roberts says they are all “long term capital projects” and the city would have to pay the money for the repairs up front—then be reimbursed for up to 75-percent by FEMA.

Roberts says the city has some available “debt capacity” to fund its share of the repairs.

He goes on to say the city could have some added revenue—which would include an upturn in property tax rolls and an increase in sales tax rebates.

Roberts says the specifics will be discussed during the workshops.

The city council will be holding budget workshops next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, beginning each day at 8:30 at City Hall on West Vulcan St.

  1. Why does the increase in tax appraisal automatically become additional revenue? City leaders can reduce the tax rate and budget accordingly like taxpayers?

    1. The problems of Federal Government has plagued our local government in the past several years and especially this past year. Our local government has metamorphosized into career politicians and career city managers, and career directors, and and career city planners. All of who operate on budgets that create higher taxes since they take advantage of non-profit motivated business practices. This is based on our government now being run by people with no practical business experience. Our local government is serving special interest groups and not tax payers as a whole. And when the special interest groups want something, they get it, and the average Joe is taxed to death. It was not always that way.

      1. What/who are the “special interest groups” that usurped the voters?

Why not just say who they are if they exist?

        Thanks

    2. Additional revenue is what city council will use to give Roberts his yearly 4-5% raise he gets every year. While other city employees get nothing.
