The Washington County commissioners court approved an application that could help equip volunteer fire departments with new radios.

Washington County Emergency Management Coordinator Bryan Ruemke says he will apply for a grant under the Homeland Security Grant Program. The program funds a range of emergency preparedness activities and purchases. Ruemke says the grant money would be used to buy new radios for volunteer fire departments in Washington County, and could possibly be used to buy new hand-held radios for EMS.

The commissioners also recognized Nelson Zibilski upon his retirement for 24 years of service as Constable for Precinct Three.

"It's not hard to say kind words about someone like you, and the one thing I know about you is that you're a man of few words- but the words that you do say matter" said Precinct Three Commissioner Kirk Hanath. "I really appreciated you working with me in Precinct Three and I thank you for that service. I think it's excellent to have someone willing to do public service for as long as you have done it" said Hanath.

In other business, the commissioners authorized the County Treasurer to advertise for bank depository bids. The bids will open on February 28th at 2 p.m. The commissioners also authorized the County Engineer to obtain sealed bids for a new truck tractor. The bids will open on February 13th at 9 a.m. and the contract will be awarded the following day.

During the meeting, the commissioners also appointed Kirk Hanath to the Investment Committee for Washington County. The position was previously held by former Precinct One Commissioner, Zeb Heckman.
