CUBETTES-RAIDERS PREPARE FOR BI-DISTRICT BATTLE

The Brenham Cubettes will have a battle on their hands when they open the 2017 softball playoffs tonight against Leander Rouse.

The Cubettes (18-10), tri-champs of District 20/5A will battle the Lady Raiders (22-6), co-champs of District 19/5A, in a best two-out-of-three.  All games will be played at Rockdale High School.

The two faced each other in the second week of the season, during the Dripping Springs Tournament.  Rouse came back to win, 4-3.

The Raiders have used a pair of pitchers over the 2017 campaign, with Chelsea Ham (16-3, 2.39 era) starting 16 games and Lexi Shafer (6-2, 3.19) getting 13 starts.

The Cubettes’ pitching is led by senior Meg Morris who is 17-7 with a 1.75 earned run average.

The Raiders are hitting a combined .388 batting average with a .455 on-base percentage.  The Cubettes are hitting .338 as a team with a .385 on-base percentage.

Catcher Bailey “Boo Boo” Vanoy is the Raiders’ leading hitter, with a .589 batting average, with 12 doubles, seven triples and 14 home runs, while driving in 44 runs.  Cleanup hitter Tevenae Tate hit .506 with 11 homers and 40 runs batted in.

Four other Raider starters are hitting over .350: Chelsea Ham (.389), Savannah Wells (.384), Lauren Ham (.365) and Yvonne Castillo (.350).  All nine Rouse starters are hitting over .300 for the season.

The Cubettes are buoyed by a solid group of seniors, but it’s sophomore Kat Marshall who leads the team with a .411 batting average, with 11 home runs and 39 runs batted in.

Two other Cubettes are hitting over .400, Kelly Jurden (.405) and Annie Cangelosi (.402).

Marshall is flanked in the order by seniors Shae Harris (.322, .470 oba, 20 runs, 17 rbi’s) and Maddie Weatherly (.352, 10 doubles, four homers, 23 rbi’s ).  Shortstop Brette Kohring anchors the lower-third of the lineup with a .366 avg., 19 runs scored and a .380 on-base average.

Game-one is set to begin tonight at 6:00 with KWHI’s broadcast beginning with the pre-game show at 5:30.  Game-two is Friday night, also at 6:00, and if a third game is necessary, would be Saturday morning at 11:00.

The Rockdale High School softball field is located at 819 Murray Ave. in Rockdale.
