FOUR INDUCTED TO BRENHAM CUB FOOTBALL HALL OF HONOR

Three former players and the long-time voice of the Cubs were inducted into the Brenham Cubs Football Hall of Honor at a luncheon ceremony today.  The Class of 2015 includes: Chip Matejowsky, Brandell Jackson, Frank Firestone and “The Sports Doc” Ed Pothul.  Also being recognized this year is the 1993 Cubs’ team.

Chip Matejowsky was an All-District, All-Brazos Valley and All-State quarterback for the Cubs, helping lead the team to the Zone Championship in 1987.  He set a single-season passing record that year, with 1,597 yards, including 15 touchdowns.  Matejowsky led the Cubs to their biggest comeback win ever, a 48-45 win over Crosby, after trailing 38-6 at halftime.  Matejowsky sealed the win with a 50-yard TD pass in the game’s final minute.  Matejowsky talked about the bonds he made through football:

Brandell Jackson was a three-year starter for the Cubs, rushing for 2,942 yards during his career, with 26 touchdowns.  He had four games in which he rushed for over 200 yards, including a high of 244 yards against Katy Taylor.  Jackson went to play at Baylor University, where he led the team in rushing his junior season.  He finished his college career with 1,482 yards—averaging over five yards per carry. Jackson thanked those how influenced his football career:

Frank Firestone was an All-District lineman for the Cubs 1993 on both offense and defense.  He was the starting center for the Blinn Buccaneers for two years—including the 1996 National Championship team.  Firestone went on to start both is junior and senior years at Southern Mississippi University.  He was elected team captain and was voted the team’s lineman of the year by his coaches and teammates.  He was also named Academic All-American.  Firestone talked about the things that have stuck with him from Brenham football:

Ed Pothul, a native of Sheffield, Massachusetts, began his run as play-by-play voice of the Cubs in September of 1989.  He came to Brenham after two years of broadcasting games for his alma mater, Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.  His broadcasting career began at age 15 in his hometown.  In 26 years as the ‘Voice of the Cubs’ The Sports Doc has called three State Championship Football games and says the 2002 State Semifinal win over Gregory-Portland remains his favorite broadcast in his career. Pothul talked about how a road trip with a college buddy to a high school football game changed his life:

The 1993 Cubs, coached by Ron Mills, lost their first three games before going on an 8-1 roll that carried them all the way to the Region Semifinals in the Astrodome against eventual State Finalist, LaMarque.

  1. Congrats to the latest honorees to the Hall of Honor. All we’re good kids and have grown into successful adults. We all had a great time reuniting a great group.

  2. Any chance the news team could identify the individuals in the photo of the ’93 Cubs? Many members of that class likely haven’t seen these guys in over 20 years, and may not recognize them.
