LOCAL OFFICIALS URGE EXTREME CAUTION

  

Emergency officials with the City of Brenham and Washington County have issued a plea to local citizens to exercise caution with the arrival this weekend of Hurricane Harvey.

Officials says there are 10-15 inches of rain anticipated over the next 3 – 5 days. This weather event will produce tropical force winds with wind gusts up to 55 mph. Hurricane Harvey is expected to make Landfall as a Category 3 storm Friday night along the middle Texas coast. Areas prone to flooding are subject to flood during this event.

City, county, EMS, fire, police, sheriff, dispatch, DPS and Bluebonnet Electric representatives check the latest update from the National Weather Service Friday afternoon at the Emergency Operations Center.

City or County Road and Bridge crews may not be able to reach all areas that flood, so please DO NOT DRIVE INTO WATER. If you do see water over a roadway or blocked barricades, stop! Do not move them. TURN AROUND DON”T DROWN!

Officials say there are many things that you can do to prepare yourself, family, pets and property. 1) Secure lose items in your yard and property, 2) move livestock to higher ground, 3) ensure pets have food and water that is accessible in a dry and safe location, 3) have supplies on hand, such as water, prescriptions and non-perishable food items.

Weather Updated for Washington County: Hurricane Harvey made landfall as a slow moving category 4 hurricane Friday night at approximately 10:00 P.M. CST. This weather event will impact Washington County and the surrounding area over the next 5 - 7 days. The storm’s projected path is uncertain, but it is still considered a category 1 hurricane at this time. There may be tropical force winds with wind gusts up to 30 to 40 mph. There is a possibility of severe weather including the chances of tornadoes. Areas prone to flooding may flood during this event. As the storm continues on it’s path, there will be times of heavy downpours and of little to no rain and wind. Be diligent throughout this weather event and stay tuned to the local media. If road flooding does occur please TURN AROUND AND DON’T DROWN. DO NOT DRIVE INTO WATER. If you see water over a roadway or barricades are blocking the roadway, STOP! Do not move them. TURN AROUND DON’T DROWN!
