SALES TAX REBATES UP LOCALLY
Local sales tax rebates saw significant increases this past month.
Brenham’s total refund for the first month of 2017 was $512,930, up 7.6 from $476,631 in January of 2016.
Washington County received a rebate of $210,290—an increase of 11.4 percent from its January 2016 payment of $188,803.
The rebate for the City of Burton more than doubled after the city began assessing a 1.5 percent sales tax that was approved by voters last May. Burton had been assessing a 1 percent sales tax.
Its rebate this month was $5,722, up 162 percent from the January 2016 refund of $2,181.
Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar sent cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts received $647.4 million in local sales tax allocations for January, 4.9 percent more than in January 2016.
These allocations are based on sales made in November by businesses that report tax monthly.
