TRAIN DERAILS IN SEALY, SHUTS DOWN HWY 36

Eight train cars derailed in downtown Sealy Tuesday afternoon, forcing State Highway 36 to close for several hours.

At approximately 11 a.m., eight Union Pacific cars hauling gravel southbound slipped off the tracks at a crossing over Second Street near the Smithville subdivision.

Portions of Main Street, Second Street, and State Highway 36 were completely shut down after the incident. Highway 36 traffic was detoured to Columbus Road and Hardeman Street.

Around 6 p.m., Sealy Police announced all roads had been cleared except for a portion of Second Street.

Union Pacific issued a statement saying there were no reported injuries.  The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
