BLINN BOARD APPROVES NEW ASSOCIATES DEGREE
The Blinn College Board of Trustees met on Tuesday evening approved addition of a new Associate of Science Degree in Education.
The Academic Affairs and the Humanities Division proposed the adoption of the new degree to facilitate alignment to workforce and career pathways. The AS in Education will align to other university programs at such schools as Texas A&M and Sam Houston.
The Board also approved a stipend for High School Faculty Teaching Dual Credit. The stipend of $500 per course, to incentivize a high school faculty teacher to cover their time and effort in completing Blinn College academic requirement. The high school teacher would be required to have a Masters Degree and the class would be required to be between four and ten students. There would be no cost to Blinn College, as the money would come from the fee payments of the students taking the course. The goal is to free up Blinn faculty to teach on one of the campuses, and teach a greater number of students.
The Trustees also got an update to the 2013-16 Strategic Plan.
Blinn’s Strategic Plan was approved by the Board of Trustees in 2013, which established student success, human capital and community enhancement as the College’s strategic priority. In May of 2015, the College discussed how best to incorporate these initiatives into the Strategic Plan, and decided to build the College’s capacity to respond to demand on the Brazos Valley Campuses and to increase enrollment on the other campuses.
Some its goals include increasing the number of sections offered at off-peak times, increase capacity of campus housing, increase section fill rate, and to add summer programs.
The Board also gave their approval seek and reward a request for qualifications for a Construction Manager at Risk for the construction of the Batting Cage Project on the Brenham campus, to be paid for with donated funds.
The facilities department will organize a batting cage committee consisting of coaches, athletic director, and alumni to develop the program to improvements for the batting cage, then work with the contractor and designer to control coast, assuring that the college spend the appropriate amount on improvement, while minimizing administrative and design cost.
There has already been a large donation to the project, and the Board recommended that action be taken soon, as the donation was given a few years back.
The cost goal is under $500,000.
The Trustees also read Resolutions in appreciation of Leon Toubin and Carolyn D Miller, for their service on the Blinn College Board of Trustees, as well as former Blinn Board president Doug Borchardt.
