WALLER CO. OFFICIALS CONSIDER BUILDING NEW JAIL

Waller County officials may soon replace the jail that has come under scrutiny since the 2015 death of Sandra Bland.

The county commissioners plan on talking about hiring an architect to build a new jail during a meeting today (Wednesday), according to the Houston Chronicle.

Officials say the new project has nothing to do with recent events or the death of Sandra Bland, but rather the worry that the jail will soon not meet state standards.

In 2016, an independent committee that investigated jail operations recommended replacing the 110-bed facility. The committee called the building “inefficient, outdated, and neither safe nor healthy for guards, staff, and inmates.”

According to the Houston Chronicle, jail maintenance costs are about $150,000 a year.

  1. These people are criminals…they should be glad they get a roof over their heads and three square meals a day… They should be glad they don’t live in pig pens outside in the cold and rain. It doesn’t seem right that criminals should have better housing and food than other people who work hard for their money and can still barely afford rent and to feed their families.

    1. By “these people” I presume you are referring to inmates — those who have been CONVICTED of a crime — not detainees, who have merely been arrested as SUSPECTS in a crime. There’s a difference, and it’s an important distinction, or will be to you, if you happen to end up a guest of that office. Remember any of the reasons behind the American Revolutionary War? Surely you would want any detainees to be well-treated while their guilt or innocence was established by the justice system? Or perhaps we should just go ahead and authorize roadside summary executions carried out by LEO?

      1. Born and raised in Brenham, buddy. Don’t know what you mean about an ivory tower, but “innocent until PROVEN guilty” is a fundamental principle of American values, and if you don’t understand that, YOU are part of the problem.
