WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONERS TO PROCLAIM MARCH 29TH AS VIETNAM VETERANS DAY

Washington County Commissioners will look to proclaim next Friday as Vietnam Veterans Day in the county when they meet Tuesday.

A proclamation will be read in honor of Vietnam-era Veterans, and the court will recognize the Veterans in attendance. The proclamation to be read Tuesday calls the public to remember the service of all Vietnam Veterans, as well as the over 58,000 men and women of the armed forces who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The court will also consider the adoption and purchase of a new voting system. County Clerk Beth Rothermel said the county is replacing the vote-counting machine, along with its associated computer hardware.  Rothermel said the county’s current equipment is nearly 20 years old.

In addition, the county is looking to replace the automated voting machines established as a result of the Help America Vote Act passed in 2002. The act required polling locations to have an automated machine available for disabled voters.

Rothermel said the equipment upgrades have been accounted for in the budget, and have been approved on the state and national levels. She said the county will still use the same optical-scan ballots as before.

Also on the agenda, commissioners will consider:

  • The addition of a court report position to the current operating budget for the Washington County Court at Law.
  • Action on Natural Gas Pipeline’s crossing of Salem Road, Dierking Road, and Randle Hill Road in Precinct 2, as proposed by AMP Intrastate Pipelines.
  • A presentation by Ashley Cureton regarding benefits of the Healthy County Wellness Program offered by the Texas Association of Counties.
  • Appointing John A. Brieden, III to the Workforce Solutions Brazos Valley Board.
  • A series of monthly reports.

Commissioners will meet Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. at the Washington County Courthouse.
