T.E.A. CAMPUS LETTER GRADES DUE NEXT MONTH

School districts across the state will be keeping an eye on the new system of rating school districts by the Texas Education Agency.

Beginning next month, every public campus in the state will receive a new letter grade between A and F.

Each district received the letter grade last year, but beginning this August, each campus will be graded.

The change has been made amidst growing controversy over whether this is the best way to determine accountability.

Brenham ISD Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson condemned the scores given out by the state in 2018, saying letter grades are a “narrow and bureaucratic-serving perspective of students’ progress.”

Burton officials have been vocal in their opposition to the new grading system.

The Brenham school district released a statement in 2017 which said it “vehemently opposed” the new letter grade designations, saying they did little to help school districts improve.

Most superintendents in the state say they are not opposed to an accountability system, but the grade system does not accurately reflect a district’s effectiveness.

School districts are expected to get their new grade ratings on August 14. They will be made public on August 15.
