Dozens of firefighters across Washington County fought a structure fire near Gay Hill Friday for several hours.

Units responded to property near the intersection of Quebe Road and FM 390 around 11:15 a.m., to a large metal barn that was engulfed in flames.  Firefighters say the fire was within minutes of spreading to the adjacent home.

The Brenham Fire Department, along with all county volunteer departments, endured intense heat to prevent the flames from spreading beyond the barns.

No injuries were reported, but there was minor heat damage to the side of the home, and the residents were said to have lost a large amount of equipment and a vehicle.  Firefighters say the metal structure was a total loss.

Units were at the scene for over three hours.  Washington County CERT and EMS were on hand to keep firefighters hydrated and take care of heat exhaustion.

A cause of the fire has not been determined.
