Ben Lewis has been recognized as this year’s recipient of the K-12 Distinguished Teaching Award from the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE).  The award honors those who have made extraordinary contributions to the teaching and learning of geography in the classroom.

Lewis was nominated by Dr. Richard Boehm, the Director of the Gilbert M. Grosvenor Center for Geographic Education and the Co-Director of the National Center for Research and Geography Education at Texas State University.  Lewis’ nomination was reviewed and unanimously accepted by a panel of NCGE reviewers.

Lewis said it is “an incredible honor” and “extremely humbling” to receive this award and national recognition after being nominated by the head of geography education at his alma mater.  He said he looks forward to spreading his love and curiosity for world history and geography with the students of the community for many years to come.

Lewis, a science and social studies teacher at Brenham Middle School, is going into his 12th year teaching in Brenham ISD.  Lewis will receive the award during an upcoming ceremony at the annual NCGE conference, which will be held virtually this year due to COVID-19.

  1. This is a well deserved award. Mr. Lewis was one of my daughters favorite teachers when she was in middle school. Mr. Lewis’s class was one filled with learning but also curiosity and good information. Congratulations!

  2. Ben is a remarkable person, outstanding teacher, and creative soul. Congratulations to him and his supportive family for being recognized as this year’s National Geography Teacher of the year!
