The Brenham City Council has its first contested race in May’s election.

Shannan Canales filed today (Monday) for the Ward One council seat held by Keith Herring, who has served on the council since December of 2004.  Herring announced his bid for re-election last month.

Canales is the co-owner of Las Americas Latin Cuisine in downtown Brenham, and is an account manager at KTEX/KWHI Radio.

Canales says she wants to be a voice for the public.

A Brenham native, Canales holds board positions with Brenham Main Street and the Texas Arts and Music Festival, and also sits on the Main Street promotions committee.  She has been involved with several local youth organizations such as Brenham Maifest, and has served as Girl Scout troop leader and Washington County Youth Soccer League coach.

Canales was also a co-founder of the Brenham Bounce event in downtown Brenham, and was recently awarded the Hometown Hero award for organizing and participating in feeding local children during the Brenham ISD lunch shutdown caused by COVID-19.

Canales says her time on the Main Street Board has shown her a lot of what opportunities there are in downtown Brenham to help both the city and the surrounding area.

Shannan and her husband, Jose, have two daughters, Carter and Camryn.

Friday is the deadline for candidates to file for a place on the ballot, while Tuesday, February 16th is the last day to file as a write-in candidate.  Election Day is Saturday, May 1st.
