BRENHAM ISD AWAITING FURTHER GUIDANCE FROM TEA AFTER GOV. ABBOTT DROPS COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS

Following Governor Greg Abbott’s announcement lifting COVID-19 restrictions starting next week, Brenham ISD is working to decide how it moves forward.

Brenham ISD Superintendent Dr. Tylor Chaplin said the district’s COVID-19 response team will meet to discuss the effects of Abbott’s order and to make sure the district is being fair to staff and students in making any potential decisions.  At this time, nothing is changing with the district’s current COVID-19 prevention procedures.

Dr. Chaplin said he anticipated an announcement like this was coming, and now all eyes shift to the Texas Education Agency (TEA), where he said Education Commissioner Mike Morath is scheduled tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon to give guidance to school districts regarding the governor’s actions.

Dr. Chaplin said the district will take any guidance the TEA provides tomorrow into consideration and make adjustments as necessary.  He said the district currently feels “really good” about the protocols in place to protect students and staff.

According to Dr. Chaplin, approximately 93 percent of students in the district are learning in-person.  With this new order, he said he is not sure what the reaction will be from staff and parents who have expressed concern about face-to-face learning in the past.  However, he said all options and scenarios will be considered before making a decision.

KWHI has reached out to Burton ISD Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy to get her thoughts on the situation, and is awaiting response.
