(Burleson Co. Jail)

After two hours of deliberation, a jury last week found 72-year-old Richard Lemeron Jones of Stafford guilty of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon against a Family Member Causing Serious Bodily Injury.

Jones was sentenced on Monday to seven years’ probation by District Judge Reva Towslee Corbett.  He was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine.

Jones is accused of shooting his cousin, Gregory Stonum, with a handgun in the 1000 block of County Road 221, northeast of Caldwell, in June 2018.  Investigators said at the time that the two were arguing about a gate on land they shared.

Testifying for the state during the trial were Stonum, DPS Troopers Clint Nance, Jamie Baker and Justin Ruiz, Texas Ranger Joshua Ray, Dr. Wade Whitmer and Jessie Jerkins.  Jones testified on his own behalf.

The state was represented by Burleson County Attorney Susan Deski and Assistant County Attorney John Brennan.
