EARLY VOTING BEGINS FOR CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT ELECTION, BURTON ISD BOND ELECTION

  

Early voting begins today (Monday) for the constitutional amendment election, as well as the bond election in Burton ISD.

Early voting will take place from today through next Friday, October 29th.  The last day to submit an application for a ballot by mail is Friday.

Eight constitutional amendments are on the ballot for voters to consider, including topics such as religious freedom, property taxes and judicial eligibility.

Early voting for the constitutional amendment election will be held at the Washington County Courthouse Annex.  Voting hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Friday, and from October 27-29.  The annex will have extended voting hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the 25th and 26th.

A breakdown of each of the eight propositions to be considered by voters, along with a sample ballot, is available below.

  • Proposition 1: Authorizes professional sports team charitable organizations to conduct raffles at rodeo venues.
  • Proposition 2: Authorizes a county to issue bonds to fund infrastructure and transportation projects in undeveloped and blighted areas.
  • Proposition 3: Amends the Texas Constitution to prohibit the state or any political subdivision from enacting a law, rule, order, or proclamation that limits religious services or organizations.
  • Proposition 4: Changes the eligibility requirements for the following judicial offices: a justice of the supreme court, a judge of the court of criminal appeals, a justice of a court of appeals, and a district judge.
  • Proposition 5: Authorizes the Texas State Commission on Judicial Conduct to accept and investigate complaints and reports against candidates running for state judicial office.
  • Proposition 6: Amends the Texas Constitution to state that residents of nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, or state-supported living centers have a right to designate an essential caregiver that may not be prohibited from visiting the resident.
  • Proposition 7: Amends the Texas Constitution to allow the legislature to extend a homestead tax limit for surviving spouses of disabled individuals as long as the spouse is 55 years old and resides at the home.
  • Proposition 8: Amends the Texas Constitution to allow the legislature to apply a homestead tax exemption for surviving spouses of members of the military to those fatally injured in the line of duty.

Burton residents can participate in Burton ISD’s bond election, which proposes $43.8 million for multiple academic and athletic projects across the district.  Those include the addition and renovation of classrooms, fine arts facility improvements, cafeteria and kitchen upgrades, an enclosed connection for district buildings, a new competition gym and stadium, and various site and drainage improvements.

Early voting for the bond election will be held at the Burton High School auditorium from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, and noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday.  Next week’s voting hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 25th, 27th and 29th, and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the 26th and 28th.

Election Day is November 2nd, and polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Eight locations will be open on Election Day for the constitutional amendment election.  Those include Friedens Church of Washington and the Washington County Expo Event Center for Precinct 1 voters, the Chappell Hill Volunteer Fire Department and Brenham VFW Hall for Precinct 2, the Brenham American Legion Hall and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Gay Hill for Precinct 3, and the Blinn College Student Center and Burton Community Center for Precinct 4.

Polls on Election Day for the bond election will be open at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Gay Hill for Precinct 3 voters, and the Burton Community Center for all other eligible voters.
