Brenham Police Chief Ron Parker presents the police department's 2021 reports to the Brenham City Council on Thursday.

Part 1 crime was down in the City of Brenham last year, according to the Brenham Police Department’s 2021 reports.

Police Chief Ron Parker presented the department’s annual, criminal analysis, racial profiling, use of force and pursuit reports on Thursday to the Brenham City Council.  According to the annual report, Part 1 offenses, which include murder, sexual assault, robbery, burglary, theft and assault, totaled 499 in 2021, down 9 percent from 546 in 2020.  The number of arrests department-wide were down 4 percent, from 682 in 2020 to 654 last year.

Parker said Part 1 crime has been on the decline since 2019.

Per the report, 72 aggravated assaults were documented in 2021, compared to 30 in 2020.  Parker said in the report that this type of offense primarily occurs inside homes and is often unexpected.  He said the police department is reviewing new methods and techniques and has joined several task forces to help reduce those numbers.  The report also points to 479 narcotic-related charges in 2021, up from 311 in 2020, and attributes the increase to officer proactivity.

Parker said communication and transparency have been a priority of his, in order to address any potential concerns from the public.

Parker also highlighted the creation of a public opinion survey and the establishment of the department’s Citizens Advisory Board as ways to keep residents in the loop on department operations.
