One suspect is in custody and another remains on the run after a chase Thursday afternoon in Brenham ended in a crash with an 18-wheeler.
Brenham police say they attempted to stop a possible stolen vehicle out of Houston just after 12:15 p.m. in the 2200 block of Highway 290 West. The driver entered the Westwood Chevron gas station parking lot while officers were behind him, but then took back off onto the highway.
According to police, the driver accelerated quickly out of the parking lot, causing the vehicle, a Dodge Charger, to lose control and strike the front right side of a passing 18-wheeler. The vehicle went over the median and into the ditch, causing it to get stuck in the grass.
The driver and passenger fled the vehicle, which had caught fire, and ran on foot into a wooded area. Officers set up a perimeter of the area and searched the woods for the suspects.
One suspect, 23-year-old Tafford Lyles of San Antonio, was apprehended. The other suspect remains at large, and was described as a Black male wearing red pants and a gray shirt.
Lyles was booked in for Evading Arrest or Detention and two active warrants out of Williamson County, both felony bond increases for Aggravated Robbery and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
Agencies that assisted Brenham police include the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Blinn Police Department, College Station Police Department K-9, Texas Game Warden, Brenham Fire Department, Washington County EMS, DPS and Washington County Constables.
There are no known injuries at this time.
