2022 RECAP: BURTON ISD SUPT. DR. EDNA KENNEDY

Burton ISD Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy speaks
at a Leaders in Education Forum held August 4,
2021 at Blinn College in Brenham.

As we proceed into 2023, KWHI is visiting with officials across Washington County to hear what they think were some of the biggest moments of the past year.

We conclude with Burton ISD Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy, who reviewed 2022 and discussed what this year will bring for Burton ISD.

The 2021 bond package was the main conversation of last year, as designs were finalized and the district secured bids for various portions of the improvement project.  Dr. Kennedy says equipment is on site and ready to start moving dirt soon.

This past year saw the district receive a 94 rating from the Texas Education Agency and a Superior rating on the Financial Integrity Rating of Texas.  It was also a year of numerous accomplishments for the junior high and high school bands, FFA, and the cross country, volleyball and football teams.

Dr. Kennedy says the district continued to build upon its emphasis of school safety and security last year, most notably with the addition of a Washington County Sheriff’s deputy as a School Resource Officer.

As the bond project progresses, Dr. Kennedy says short-term solutions are being explored to accommodate a steadily increasing student population before the new buildings are complete.

Dr. Kennedy and other Region VI superintendents met recently to discuss topics of significance for lawmakers to address when they start their new legislative session next week.  She says one of the most urgent issues is making sure teachers and staff are properly compensated.

Dr. Kennedy has been Burton ISD’s superintendent since 2015, after previously serving in that role in Marion ISD.
