Dave Bunger announced his candidacy today (Thursday) for the post currently held by Julie Renken, who is not pursuing re-election next year.  Bunger, who opened a private law practice in Brenham in April 2022, joins Washington County’s First Assistant District Attorney Derek Estep as a Republican candidate in the primary election on March 5, 2024.

Bunger says his past experiences have led him to understand how to run an efficient and effective district attorney’s office.

Originally from Mesquite, Bunger graduated from Texas A&M-Commerce with advanced degrees in psychology and counseling.  He has worked in Texas school districts helping children with psychological and educational challenges.

Bunger also graduated from the South Texas College of Law and joined the Dallas County District Attorney’s office in 2008, serving as the chief felony prosecutor of the checks/financial crimes division.  Additionally, he served as general counsel to a North Texas school district where he advised administrators and school trustees on a variety of legal issues.

Bunger says whatever happens with a case, the goal must be fairness and timeliness.

Dave moved to Brenham in 2021 with his wife, Karen Rosenbaum Bunger, who is a Brenham native.  Their two daughters go to school in Brenham ISD, and he plays regularly with the West Third Band at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Candidates can officially file for a place on the primary ballot starting November 11th.
