The Washington County community gave thanks to local and area veterans today (Saturday) during the annual Veterans Day program at the Brenham American Legion Hall.

The keynote speaker for the event, hosted by the Washington County Veterans Association, was retired Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Hatley.  Hatley’s career included postings to duty stations both within the continental United States and overseas, and he has received several awards and decorations.

Hatley talked about the history of Veterans Day, the oath taken by servicemembers, and their inner-service rivalries.  He spoke on Americanism and its meaning to those who serve.

Hatley also discussed the lasting impact left by veterans past and present.

The program additionally featured remarks from local dignitaries including Washington County Commissioner Kirk Hanath, Brenham City Councilmember Shannan Canales, Burton Mayor Karen Buck and a letter from State Senator Lois Kolkhorst.  Local veterans and auxiliary members who have passed on were also recognized.

A barbecue chicken and pork sausage meal was served following the program, with proceeds going toward Washington County veterans groups.

Hatley’s full speech can be heard below.
