Local students from Brenham ISD were recently honored at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for showcasing their artistic abilities.

Heily Mellado was named “Best of Show.” Meanwhile, Melanie Taing and Katherine Inestroza both received Gold Medals.

Peyton Ivy also received a Special Merit Medal in the Art Contest.

In addition to that, there was a Quick Draw contest, where Inestroza and Peighton Lawson were chosen among the finalists.

They competed as part of a group of 28 students from around the Houston area in which each contestant had 50 minutes to draw a picture of a cowboy.

According to Brenham ISD Art Teacher Steven Henry, their entries will be on display in the Hayloft Gallery until the conclusion of the Rodeo.

Photos of the entries can currently be seen in this story at kwhi.com.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s School Art Program is open to youth in Pre-kindergarten up to the 12th grade.

They receive thousands of entries each year from 130 different school districts, as well as private and parochial schools.
