BURTON CITY COUNCIL PROPOSES NO-NEW-REVENUE TAX RATE

The Burton City Council on Tuesday moved to propose a no-new-revenue property tax rate.

The rate of $0.297267 per $100 valuation consists of $0.045349 for maintenance and operations (M&O) and $0.251918 for interest and sinking (I&S).  The rate is above the current adopted rate of $0.289790 per $100.

The voter-approval rate is listed at $0.321441 per $100.

A public hearing for the tax rate will be held on Tuesday, September 10th at 5:30 p.m.

Other business at Tuesday’s meeting included approving an ordinance for the Laas-Weeren Park’s use and rules, in which the city strikes from the document the previous rule that made it illegal to possess or consume alcohol in the park, save for city-approved events.

The council also agreed to contract with both BEFCO Engineering and Strand Associates for on-demand or as-needed engineering services.  Councilmembers liked having the option of being able to choose one or the other depending on their availability, as well as their expertise in different areas.

The council later approved a bid from JMendoza Tree Service for $2,900 to remove a declining tree located on North Brazos Street.  City Secretary Angela Harrington said one of the tree’s limbs fell onto a vehicle, and this is to avoid any more possible damage.

A resolution was approved to authorize road closures for the Trick or Treat Trail on October 26th from 5 to 8 p.m.  Harrington said this year, the closures will include portions of Spur 125 and FM 390, like with the Cotton Gin Festival.

An item to purchase a new security camera system was tabled, with councilmembers requesting that the bidding vendors come to the council’s meeting next month.
