EARLY VOTING WRAPS UP FOR BURTON CITY COUNCIL ELECTION; ELECTIONS OFFICE CORRECTING ERROR SHOWING DUPLICATE NAMES ON VOTER LIST

Early voting has concluded for the Burton City Council election this Saturday.

According to Washington County Elections Administrator Carol Jackson, 80 people came out to vote at Burton City Hall over the six days of early voting, including 78 for the Burton council election and 2 in the Giddings ISD trustee election.

Jackson informed the Burton City Council at its meeting on Tuesday that issues with the state voter registration system have caused some problems for entities holding elections, as they are currently having to pull voter lists from the county’s pollbooks and sort them manually to show who has voted on specific days.  As a result, there have been instances of individual voters showing up on separate days, but Jackson stressed that this is a visual error and that voters are not able to participate multiple times in the same election.

Jackson encouraged anyone who finds an error on the voter list, posted on the Elections website, to contact the Washington County Elections Office.

The daily tally included 12 early voters on April 20th, 13 on April 22nd, 12 on April 23rd, 17 on April 24th, 11 on April 27th and 13 on April 28th.  The two Giddings ISD ballots were cast on April 23rd.  There was no early voting on April 21st due to the San Jacinto Day state holiday.

According to data from Jackson, there are 272 registered voters in the City of Burton and 156 in the Washington County voting precinct that falls under Giddings ISD.  Therefore, early turnout sits at 29 percent for Burton and 1 percent for the Giddings ISD precinct.

The council election features incumbents Tommie Gilmon, Jeff Eckhardt and Macey Tidwell, who are challenged respectively by Sheila Ripple, Charly Ruemke and Berneake Gantt.

Burton City Hall will be open for Election Day on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
