BRENHAM MAN SENTENCED TO 45 YEARS IN PRISON

A Brenham man was sentenced to 45 years in prison by Judge Carson Campbell for Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Young Child.  Luis Guerrero, 45, of Brenham, was found guilty by a jury on November 6th and the case was recessed for a punishment hearing.

Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Young Child is a specially categorized felony. It allows the State to charge a person for committing two or more sex acts against a child under 14 during a period of more than 30 days in duration. The punishment range is 25-99 years, or life, in prison, and up to a $10,000 fine. There is no parole for this offense, so Guerrero will have to serve the entire sentence.

During the punishment hearing the victim testified about additional physical abuse by Guerrero, and the long-term effects it had on her life. The Court also heard from Investigator Mitch Dreyer of the Sheriff’s Office. During the guilt portion of the trial, Guerrero’s phone was seized and searched pursuant to a search warrant on probable cause that Guerrero was hiding a witness and lying to law enforcement about her location. Investigator Dreyer described the text messages that were located in the phone which showed the plan to keep the witness hidden, even to the point of telling others to delete any messages from or about the witness.

During closing District Attorney Renken urged the Court to assess a life sentence due to how deeply the victim was affected in every part of life and how much she lost. Renken argued that the sentence should “send a message of deterrence to other sex offenders in Washington County.”
After the sentence was announced, Renken spoke again about the victim, “I’m so proud of her for standing up this monster who ruined her childhood. She was courageous on the stand and finally had her whole story heard.” Asked about the sentence, Renken commented, “Of course we wanted life, but 45 years with no parole is effectively life for this defendant.” “I am thankful for the jury that convicted and the judge that put him in prison for the rest of his life.”

  1. Now the third offense of DWI’s need to be addressed. Been reading about to many getting probation. To many driving stoned and buzzed on their third offense. Are you waiting for a death to stop this? Only jail will save lives. We need tougher DA’s that follow through. Thank you Ms. Renken for pushing for justice.
