STATE LIBRARY COMMISSION MEMBERS GATHER FOR RECEPTION AHEAD OF FRIDAY’S MEETING IN BRENHAM
Several members of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) gathered at the Brenham Heritage Museum for a reception on Thursday as they prepare to hold a meeting today (Friday) in Brenham for the first time.
Commissioners met with officials from the museum, the Fortnightly Club of Brenham and other local dignitaries leading up to today’s meeting at the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library.
Brad Tegeler of Brenham, who is a member of the Commission and also serves as vice chair of the museum’s Board of Directors, said he is honored that one of the state agencies that oversees Texas history chose to come to Brenham, which has a storied past of its own.
Tegeler said this visit came about after the Commission’s chair, Martha Wong, attended an event at the Brenham library and was impressed with the facility. The Fortnightly Club soon invited the Commission to hold one of its meetings at the library. The Commission has campuses in Austin and Liberty, but will hold a traveling meeting once a year.
Gloria Meraz, Director and Librarian for the TSLAC, said the agency manages many of the state’s information functions, including the preservation and digitization of historic documents and public records. It also supports library services throughout Texas and works to make reading material more accessible by way of braille books, large-print books and audio books.
Meraz praised Brenham’s library system and what it offers to the community, calling it “forward-thinking” and “proactive.”
Today’s commission meeting at the library begins at 8:30 a.m. The meeting is open to the public and will include a tour of the library.
