BURTON FOOTBALL ENDS REGULAR SEASON WITH A 35-33 LOSS TO GRANGER
The Burton Panther Football Team ended the regular season with their second straight tough luck loss as they fell to Granger 35-33.
The Lions got on the scoreboard first by returning the opening kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown and then getting the two-point conversion to take an early 8-0 lead.
Burton would answer as Kayden Patterson threw a 72-yard touchdown pass to Braydon Martin to cut the lead to 8-6. Rueben Rodriguez missed the extra point.
Granger reached the end zone on a 50-yard touchdown to increase their advantage to 14-6.
Patterson followed up with a 36-yard touchdown run, and Rodriguez made the PAT to cut the lead to 14-13.
The Lions scored their third touchdown of the first quarter on a 35-yard run to make it 21-13.
Patterson rounded out the scoring with a seven-yard run, and the extra point was missed. At the end of the first quarter, Burton trailed 21-19.
Granger scored the only touchdown in the second quarter on a 42-yard pass to go into the locker room at half time with a 28-19 lead.
In the third quarter, the Panthers scored on a one-yard run by Patterson. He then completed a pass to Eli Simank for the two-point conversion. That made it a one-point game 28-27.
The Lions scored on a three-yard run in the fourth quarter to increase their lead to 35-27.
Burton nearly tied it up. Patterson found Braydon Martin on a 24-yard touchdown pass to cut it to 35-33. The Panthers went for two, but the try was no good, and Granger escaped with the win.
Burton finished the regular season with an overall record of 8-2, and a district record of 5-2. They ended up in third place behind Granger and Iola, two teams that they lost to by a combined three points. Somerville will be the fourth-place team.
Due to McDade and Snook deciding to forfeit their remaining games, the four playoff teams from District 13-2A Division II will have a bye next week before starting the playoffs.
