BOOK SELECTION ANNOUNCED FOR 2019 WASHINGTON CO. READ

Lifetime Learning has announced its choice for the 2019 Washington County READ: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer.

The book is a true story about Kamkwamba and his dream to bring electricity and running water to his small village in Malawi.  As an 11-year-old boy, William had heard about windmills, and he used scrap metal, tractor and bicycle parts and a pile of forgotten science textbooks to bring his dream to reality.

The book, published in 2009, is a New York Times Bestseller and was recently made into a movie by Netflix.  One book summary reads, “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is a remarkable true story about human inventiveness and its power to overcome crippling adversity.  It will inspire anyone who doubts the power of one individual’s ability to change his community and better the lives of those around him.”

This year’s READ is the 11th year for the event, and will be held on October 24th at the Unity Theatre in Brenham.  More details will be announced as they are finalized. Co-chairs for this year’s event are Cindy Nash and Shirley Herring.
