BRENHAM AP PHYSICS CLASS HOLDS CARDBOARD BOAT RACES

The Brenham High School AP Physics class held their end of year cardboard boat races at the Blue Bell Aquatic Center this (Wednesday) morning.  Each year the students are challenged with designing and building boats out of cardboard that can hold at least one person and be able to be paddled across the indoor pool at the Aquatic Center.  The winner of the race today was a boat paddled by Tatum Smidovec and built by her team members Hunter Fritz, Kaitlin Whitehead, and Parker Puckett.

Students put to use what they have learned about buoyancy, displacement and creative design in the construction of the boats. AP Physics teacher Elizabeth Kolby explains why this event is the highlight of the class:

Tatum Smidovec paddles her boat to victory at the AP Physics class boat race.

Students celebrate after the race with trophies and cupcakes.

  1. Ok, that is really great. It takes concepts and turns them into reality and challenges the students to overcome problems. Love it, good job to their teacher! If more teachers found creative ways to apply lessons, I think kids would learn and remember a lot more.
