BURTON CITY COUNCIL TO SET PROPERTY TAX RATE

The Burton City Council will look to adopt a property tax rate and the new appraisal budget at Monday evening’s meeting.

Currently, the Burton property tax rate sits at 50 cents per $100, with a 0.099 maintenance and operations rate, and a 0.401 debt service rate.  Councilmembers will look to set a date and time for a public hearing regarding the rates.  They will also consider the proposed budget for the Washington County Appraisal District for the upcoming year, and allow the retention of funds from the 2016-17 budget.

The council will also hear the appraisal district’s decision to move $15,000 from fleet replacement funds, to use for a computer backup system.

Burton Secretary Angela Weyand says that each of these items have already been discussed and approved with the appraisal district.

The council will also consider drilling a backup water well, which would replace the collapsed water well at East Mulberry Street and North Brazos Street.  Weyand says this item was postponed about a year ago on the agenda, but it needed to be put back and reconsidered.  This well would simply be a backup to the one the city drilled in 2012, after the previous backup well collapsed in January 2017, due to lightning damage.

In addition, the council will consider hiring Brenham attorney Aaron Kleinschmidt as Burton’s city attorney and prosecutor.  Kleinschmidt has been a lawyer in Brenham for two years.

Councilmembers will also look at adopting an ordinance dealing with use of recreational vehicles within the city, as well as an amendment to an ordinance regarding building code permits and inspections.

The council will hear a report from the Beautification Committee, before adjourning into executive session to discuss personnel matters.  The council will meet Monday at 5:30 p.m., at Burton City Hall.
