CUBS RALLY TO TAME BEARS, 24-20
The Brenham Cubs rallied from 10 points down to defeat Bastrop, 24-20 at Cubs Stadium, Friday night.
Tyree Jackson’s 5-yard run with 4:43 left in the game capped the comeback that saw the Cubs rally from a 10-point deficit twice.
Brenham (5-3/4-1) fell behind 20-10 late in the third quarter when Jhequay Cretin scored on a 7-yard run. But on the ensuing kickoff Lonterrious McClain raced 90 yards down the right sideline to draw the Cubs back to within a field goal.
The Cubs’ defense then stiffened up, shutting the Bears (5-3/3-2) out the rest of the way.
Bastrop jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the first half on a 10-yard run by quarterback Desmond Young and an 8-yard pass from Young to Donovan Strong.
The Cubs’ first two offensive series featured long, time-consuming drives deep into Bastrop territory that only resulted in a 27-yard field goal by Victor Mendoza.
But, on their third drive, the Cubs cashed in with a 5-yard scoring run by Daylonn McCowan, cutting the Bastrop lead to 13-10 at halftime.
On the Bears’ final drive, they created a few anxious moments, converting a fourth-and-18 from deep in their own end driving the ball to the Cubs’ 21-yard line before eventually tuning the ball over on downs.
The Cubs will travel to Leander Glen next Friday night in a battle that could mean a district championship, with both teams 4-1 in district play and just one more week remaining.
Kickoff next Friday at Leander is set for 7:30 with a 7:00 pre-game on AM 1280 KWHI, FM 101.7 and www.kwhi.com.
