Authorities removed nearly 300 animals from a Grimes County home on Wednesday.

According to Grimes County Investigator Kindale Pittman, the sheriff’s office received an anonymous tip on Tuesday about a large number of dogs and horses, which were being held in extremely poor conditions.  The animals were located at a home off of Highway 30 and FM 244, in Carlos.

Grimes County Sheriff’s deputies, along with members of the Houston Humane Society, discovered 242 dogs and 49 ponies on the property.

The dogs and ponies were spread throughout the property, with the dogs being held in kennels in barns and in cars.  Investigators also discovered several dead animals around the property.

The homeowner voluntarily gave up all the animals, which are now being cared for in Houston.  This case will be given to the Grimes County District Attorney’s office.

Grimes County authorities acted on a similar report about this property in 2010, when more than 100 horses and 40 dogs were removed.
