WORK ON HOHLT PARK STREAM RESTORATION PROJECT BEGINS

Crews have begun their work at Hohlt Park to clear up erosion damage from flooding events in past years.

Work began this (Monday) morning at the park at Little Sandy Creek, near its crossing with Highway 36 North. The project stems from the flooding events in 2016, and calls for repairs from the southern property line near the Amphitheatre pedestrian bridge, wrapping around to the main vehicular bridge in the middle parking lot.  Many of the eroded areas are becoming close to the trail and the parking lots.

Anyone driving by the park might notice a pile of large white rocks sitting on the property. Public Works Director Dane Rau says those are being laid into the creek to protect its banks from erosion.

The Brenham City Council in December awarded a project bid to Solid Bridge Construction for $371,459.

Rau expects the major work at the site to wrap up in less than two months, and possibly sooner.

The city has received grant funding for the project through the National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and will be responsible for roughly $70,000 in project costs.

  1. Big wwaste of money. You can not control the water erosion by fixing one problem will make another problem.

  2. The banks of Little Sandy Creek were stable for years when Mother Nature was allowed to have native vegetation along the banks. Unfortunately, the city supervisors in charge of the creek sprayed weed killer along the banks. This killed all of the native vegetation and created the bank erosion. I hope the antidote of putting boulders in the creek works; but, I also know rocks roll jam up culverts too.
