CUBS EDGE HUNTSVILLE–TAKE DISTRICT TITLE

On paper, the Cubs game Tuesday night was a complete mis-match.  The first-place Cubs were expected to roll to an easy win over the Hornets, who entered the game without a win in district play.

But the renewal of one of the oldest rivalries in all of Texas high school sports did not go as expected.

The Cubs (19-6/12-1) were forced to extra innings before pulling out a 2-1 victory.

The Cubs took their only lead of the game in the top of the ninth when Davion Lockett raced home on a throwing error on a double-steal attempt.

Chandler Jozwiak, on in relief of starter Eric Wellmann, shut down the Hornets (4-22/0-13) in the bottom of the inning to secure the win and the outright District 20/5A championship.  It is the school's 47th district title for the Cubs since 1952 (65 years).  It also marks the 34th straight season the Cubs have qualified for the playoffs.

The Cubs had to come-from-behind to get the victory.  Huntsville took a 1-0 lead in the 4th inning when Justin Green singled, stole second, then raced home on Mike Howell’s rbi-single.

The Cubs evened the score in the fifth on Jozwiak’s rbi-single that drove home Chris Kubeczka, who had walked to lead off the frame.

Jozwiak (7-1) went three innings, striking out six batters and didn’t allow a base-runner.  Wellmann was equally effective, yielding just one run on three hits, while striking out six over six innings.

The Hornets’ starter, Chris McGinty held the Cubs to a lone run on five hits over six innings, while striking out six batters.  Brent Sowell took the tough loss, as he yielded just one unearned run on three hits.

Pierce Weiss led the Cubs’ hitters with two singles, while Darvis Watson, Dane Acker, Jozwiak, Wellmann, Lockett and Kubeczka all added singles.

Howell (2-for-3) and Green collected the lone hits for the Hornets.

The Cubs will close out the regular season Friday night when they host the Magnolia Bulldogs (21-4/9-3) at 7:00 at Firemen’s Park.
