SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATES BURGLARY OF A HABITATION

According to Washington County Sheriff Otto Hanak, on Wednesday, April 8th, at approximately 3:45 pm, Deputy Jason Barnett initiated an investigation into a Burglary of a Habitation which occurred off State Highway 36 North and on Affleck Road.  Items unaccounted for thus far consisted of a television and watch.

Prior to the arrival of Deputy Barnett, an alert witness contacted Washington County Dispatch and provided a description of an unfamiliar vehicle, described as a dark grey Ford pickup truck with tinted windows that was parked in the driveway of a residence. This witness also provided a license plate number and a direction of travel.  Local officers attempted to locate the vehicle but were unsuccessful. Upon the arrival of Deputy Barnett, he met with the witness who described the vehicle and driver as a white male with a gray/black beard.  A registration check of the vehicle listed the owner’s address in Bellville.

At approximately 3:50 pm, Washington County Sheriff's Office Patrol Sergeant Brad Kulow contacted the Bellville Police Department seeking assistance in locating the suspect vehicle within their city limits and at a particular residence. A short time later Bellville Police located the vehicle at the residence and met with the owner identified as 51 year old Eugene Douglas Hunt.

Hunt admitted to committing the Washington County burglary and stealing various items.  Items were recovered by Bellville Police who also seized methamphetamine and a pistol from his property.  According to police records, Hunt was on parole until 2020 and could not possess a weapon.  Bellville Police arrested and charged Hunt with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and Possession of a Controlled Substance and on 04-09-2015, Hunt posted $25,000.00 in bonds and was released to the custody of the Washington County Sheriff's Office who had obtained a felony arrest warrant charging him with Burglary of a Habitation.  The bond on that charge was set at $250,000.00.

Hunt has an extremely lengthy history with offenses ranging from crimes against persons as well as crimes against property that were committed in several counties throughout the State of Texas. Hunt remains in the Washington County jail.

As in any case where questionable circumstances exist, Sheriff Hanak want to make sure our citizens report any and all suspicious activity, either to the Dispatch non-emergency number of 979-337-7272, or if an emergency, always dial 911.  This case alone proves how much law enforcement agencies depend on the public for their help so that these criminals can be caught and held accountable.  The Washington County Sheriff's Office thanks those that have provided such critical assistance.
