GOV. ABBOTT THREATENS TO CUT FUNDING FOR TEXAS LEGISLATURE AFTER ELECTIONS BILL DIES

Governor Greg Abbott is threatening to defund the Texas Legislature after the GOP’s priority elections bill failed to pass.

Governor Greg Abbott

On Monday, Abbott said on Twitter that he plans to veto Article 10 of the state budget, which funds the legislative branch.  He said in the tweet there will be “no pay for those who abandon their responsibilities.”

This comes after Democrats left the House floor late Sunday night, breaking quorum and blocking passage of legislation that would have imposed stricter election regulations.

Democrats quickly condemned Abbott’s threat, with State Representative Donna Howard of Austin saying defunding the legislature would “eliminate the branch of government that represents the people and basically create a monarchy.”

Abbott in a statement said he had declared election integrity and bail reform to be “must-pass emergency items” at the beginning of the legislative session, and called it “deeply disappointing and concerning” that neither bill reached his desk.  He said these two items will be added to the agenda for a special session, but did not say when that special session would take place.

  1. It appears that the Democrats are scared to death of an honest election. Keep after them Governor!

  2. Monarchy. He thinks he is “King Abbott”. Less government is GOP platform. This is not GOP.

    1. You do not seem to understand.
      Quiting is not working.
      Hiding is not working.
What are the Democrats scared of?
      Reality, the truth, or both?

    2. Spot on Mike. It won’t be a problem for the returning democratic legislators, you can be sure those wages will be covered by people who know that government in the land of the free and is of the people, by the people, and for the people. Dictators and kings are for weak minded people. It is a sad time, because GOP are killing their party and have lost sight of democracy.

      1. The American Flag should always be placed above every other flag or flags, on a flag pole in this country. Had to say it folks.

      2. If we do not do our jobs, we get no pay. Walking out on a session, is absolutely the same thing. Hiding from their responsibilities, is same.

      3. Agree with An Independent and Mike.
The GOP likes only 1 type of voter. They only like a voter that votes straight GOP. The GOP has been trying to pass UN-democratic bills. We in America should encourage everyone to Vote. We should have a 3 day weekend where EVERYONE votes, no Questions asked. Dip right index finger in permanent ink that lasts a week. take a finger print as well. if you vote twice then 10,000 fine or finger amputation. No ID no question. We are all human beings living the best we can in America.
Why are republicans unwilling to expand voting? They know they are on the wrong side of all the policies that are popular. If the GOP took up popular stands they might have a fighting chance.
Soon regardless of who the exclude from voting there will be a major whiplash against the GOP. Just 2-3 more election cycles and they will be toast. Mark my words. The GOP is making themselves irrelevant in all but the rural areas. Look at the cities, look at the suburbs.

    3. He has every right to do this. If you walked out of your job, would still expect to get paid? They forget they work for the citizens and we pay their salary. If you aren’t working , you should not get paid. Every state needs election reform. No one is trying to stop anyone from voting. Having an ID to vote should be a requirement. You need an ID to do most anything from renting/buying a house, to opening any bank or credit account,. Need ID to purchase alcohol, cigarettes and even to apply for any government assistance, and many other things.
