BRENHAM ROTARY CLUB DISSOLVING

One of the oldest civic organizations in Brenham is holding its final meeting tomorrow (Tuesday).

The Brenham Rotary Club, which was chartered in 1921, is being dissolved after their noon meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Cannery Kitchen. Brenham Rotary Club members just celebrated the club’s 100th anniversary last fall. Civic organizations across the US have seen dwindling attendance and membership recently, especially since the COVID-19 epidemic. At one time the Brenham Rotary Club had over 200 members, often with almost 100 showing up each Tuesday for their weekly luncheon meetings. But in 2009, a second club was formed in Brenham from the membership, the Rotary Club of Washington County.

A few years ago an attempt was made to merge the two clubs again under the name Brenham – Washington County Rotary Club. That merger never happened as Members of the Washington County Club did not want to assume the Brenham club’s charter date of 1921. There was also disagreement over the combined name for the club.

The Brenham Rotary Club’s charter members in 1921 included many familiar local names: T.A. Adams, F.L. Amsler, H.W. Arp, The Rev. S. Moylan Bird, W.A. Darter, E.P. Davis, W.J. Embrey, E.A. Eversburg, W.G. Grebe, A.W. Hacker, W.F. Hasskarl Sr., W.R. Jahnke, Abe Klein, J.J. Marek, Henry Mueller, George Neu, R.E. Nicholson, William Seidel Jr., William Stuckert, A.A. Wangemann, R.R. Wells, C.L. Wilkins, and Henrey Winkelmann.

  1. Not too good news. Some younger clubs are looking forward to achieve the milestone that this great club have achieved. We are also looking to increase Rotary membership number to pass the 1.2 million usually quoted. Pray something positive happens

  2. We, the Rotary Club of Concord, NH, is celebrating our 100th anniversary this year. Like many clubs our membership has dwindled from over 120 members, 10 years ago, to about 55 members to date. The fact that this happening is disconcerting.
Would anyone share their thoughts on the subject? Also, any successful reversals..

  3. This is not a good news, losing that Club of great history is a big blow to Rotary world in general.
Anyway, it’s better to wind down officially than to just abandon the Club.
Members shall have the opportunity to share one last memorable fellowship during which they can still track themselves once the going forward plan for each of them is shared.
I congratulate the Club to have been in existence for so long reaching an all time high membership strength of 200!
That was not a mean achievement when minimum number acceptable for forming a new Club is 20 by RI.
Fare thee well Brenham Rotary Club.

    1. Yes, it is sad to see another Club lost in the abbis of time…it was a great concept but not viable in contemporary times

    2. This is sad to say the least, are there know rotaractors above 30 years of age to take over and sustain the history of this great club that was formed as far back in 1921. I personally appealing to the entire membership of the club to reconsider their resolved to wind down such club with great historical record. God bless you all, God bless rotary and Rotarians all over the world. I remain yours truly, Rotarian Matthew Ossai, Rotary Club Of Apo district 9125 Nigerian.

  4. It’s indeed sad that a Club with such a rich history goes down to an unprecedented end.

However, individual members can find other Clubs to join and keep the fire burning.

Thank you RC Brenham for serving for over 100 years.

  6. It’s sad to see Rotary decline in Texas. After 34 years of membership, I’ve seen successful Clubs dissolve in the NW Houston area (FM1960 and Willowbrook) and another (Sunset) merge after a decade with a new Club that meets so far away the members can’t get to the meetings. Rotary has been an important part of my life for many years. I hope that former Rotarians find another way to continue their volunteerism for their communities and the globe. Their efforts are invaluable to “making a difference” in our challenging world crises.

  7. Just moved here recently and was looking forward to joining a Working civic org to participating with. I am a Vietnam veteran and just looking forward to helping others in our community.

  8. That’s a pity that a club with such a long tradition and so many great names – members stops working. My club is only 25 years old, we are only 20 members, and we have to o ercome different obstacles living ine situation of our country – Poland. But still we are serving above selves. Especially now, in the situation of war in Ukraine, helping the refugees became our goal. I wish you to stay in the Rotarian family and take satisfaction from your actions.

    1. Our club will welcome any member of your club. Pleae reach out to us at http://www.rotaryeclubone.org
Rotary’s first eClub. Your members can stay together in a new club, still do projects together, meet as members of our clubd and meet members from all over the world. It could be an exciting new opportunity for you

    2. It is a sad pity.

      Best wishes.
