TEXAS INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION THIS WEEKEND AT WASHINGTON-ON-THE-BRAZOS

It’s the 187th anniversary of Texas independence, and the birthplace of Texas has a big party planned.

The Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site is hosting its two-day living history celebration tomorrow (Saturday) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Washington-on-the-Brazos Historical Foundation Administrator Ginger Moreland says the whole family can enjoy historical reenactments, tours, live music and other activities all where Texas became Texas.

New this year for the event will be a parade tomorrow starting at 10:30 a.m. on Ferry Street, near Independence Hall.  The parade will include an 1850s stagecoach, the Navasota High School Drumline, and period clothed re-enactors and interpreters.  The grand marshal for the parade will be State Senator Lois Kolkhorst.

Also part of the festivities will be musket and cannon firings, surveying of the old town of Washington, walkthroughs of an authentic 1836 Texas Army camp, and the cutting of the giant Texas birthday cake.

Cyndee Smith, Immediate Past President of the Historical Foundation, reminds the public that soon after this celebration, renovations will begin to overhaul the Star of the Republic Museum and many other facilities and exhibits.

Admission fees will be waived for the site attractions.  Admission to the grounds, on-site shuttles and parking will also be free.
