2023 RECAP: BURTON MAYOR KAREN BUCK

With 2023 behind us, KWHI is meeting with officials around Washington County to look at the past year in retrospect.

Karen Buck is sworn in as the City of Burton's new
member during the city council's meeting on May
16, 2023.

We conclude the series with the City of Burton and Mayor Karen Buck, who went over some of the city’s accomplishments and difficulties in 2023 and discussed what is to come in 2024.

This past year had positive news for the city, which was awarded a $593,800 grant from the Texas General Land Office Regional Mitigation Fund, to be used in drilling a second water well.  Buck says the well was part of a larger – and ongoing – emphasis on updating and improving the city’s aging water and sewer infrastructure.

A bizarre problem for the city popped up in the way of large numbers of buzzards, who nested at the water tower, targeted trash receptacles around town and were generally a hazard and nuisance for local residents.  Buck says while some vultures are still hanging around, the efforts of a Texas Parks and Wildlife biologist have mostly rectified the issue.

Buck says a big focus in 2023 was bringing the city up to date with policies and procedures.  Being her first year as mayor, a lot of training and education took place in getting up to speed with the inner workings of municipal government, but now she is ready to take on the true work at hand.

Buck won election and was sworn in as Burton’s mayor this past May.
