TAX RATE PROPOSAL PART OF LENGTHY AGENDA FOR BURTON CITY COUNCIL

The Burton City Council has a busy agenda slated for its meeting on Tuesday.

Among the action items is setting the proposed no-new-revenue property tax rate for 2024 at $0.297267 per $100 valuation.  The rate is made up of $0.045349 for maintenance and operations (M&O) and $0.251918 for interest and sinking (I&S).

The tax rate is actually higher than the existing rate of $0.289790 per $100, but certified property values from the Washington County Appraisal District show that this year’s average home market value in the city decreased from last year.

A public hearing for the tax rate will be set for Tuesday, September 10th at 5:30 p.m.

Following that, councilmembers will take possible action on contracting with BEFCO Engineering and/or Strand Associates for on-demand or as-needed engineering services.

The council will then consider an ordinance regarding the use and rules for Laas-Weeren Park, the purchase of a new security camera system for city hall, authorizing road closures for the Trick or Treat Trail on October 26th from 5 to 8 p.m., and removing a declining tree on North Brazos Street.

There will also be several discussion-only items and updates.  Councilmembers will discuss the city’s water well and water line projects, as well as the city’s applications through the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Community Development Block Grant program.  In addition, they will discuss a ball park use agreement with Burton Friends and Neighbors, what should be on a survey gathering information on the opinions of City of Burton residents about the city’s economy and future development opportunities, and a simplified subdivision or land division ordinance and other possible options available.

The council will meet Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Burton City Hall.
