Washington County Commissioners read a proclamation during a brief meeting today (Tuesday), calling to mind the victims of domestic violence.

proclamation read by Washington County
Commissioners on Tuesday, recognizing the month
of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Recognizing the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the proclamation pledges collaboration with law enforcement, educators, social service providers, clergy, citizens and others to end domestic violence and help those impacted to rebuild their lives.
After reading the proclamation, the court heard a presentation from Hilda Martinez of Focusing Families Crisis Center, a nonprofit organization that supports victims in Washington, Austin, Grimes and Waller counties and northwest Harris County. Martinez illustrated the physical and emotional struggle that family violence victims face by reading a poem, titled, “I Got Flowers Today.”
Martinez thanked commissioners for recognizing domestic violence awareness through these proclamations and asked for their continued support. She also encouraged the public to get involved by wearing purple.
County Judge John Durrenberger acknowledged Focusing Families for its work and called on everyone to “take it to heart.” He urged those who may know someone suffering abuse to speak up and attempt to get them help.
In other business, commissioners:
- Approved an order to abandon/vacate a portion of McNelly Lane and to convey property to adjoining land owners as grantees.
- Directed the county auditor to conduct an annual audit of the asset seizure and forfeiture accounts of the 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office, pursuant to Texas Code of Criminal Procedure.
- Discussed a formal notice from PGMS for a service line bore within the county right-of-way of Helm Road in Precinct 3. No action was necessary.
