The Washington-on-the-Brazos Historical Foundation is a recipient of the Friends Alliance Award.

The foundation was honored at the Texas Historical Commission’s (THC) Real Places conference, held February 2-4 in Austin.

The Friends Alliance Award, offered by the Friends of the THC in coordination with the historic site’s Community Engagement Program, honors a friends group, a supporting nonprofit or a volunteer for their exemplary work in their partnership with a THC state historic site.

The foundation was awarded for its work supporting Washington-on-the-Brazos this past year when, in the interest of public safety, the site opted to cancel the two-day Independence Day festival.  Instead, the foundation raised funds to support the creation of the dramatic film, “Independence: A Lone Star Rises”.

The film debuted on March 31, 2021, and has since been used widely as an educational resource by other historic sites and teachers.  It can be viewed on the THC’s YouTube channel.
