CUBS DEFEAT LIBERTY HILL 30-27 FOR AREA ROUND CHAMPIONSHIP
The Brenham Cub Football Team picked up a hard fought 30-27 Area Round victory over the Liberty Hill Panthers last (Friday) night at the Pfield in Pflugerville.
Jakoby Dixon did attempt to play in the game, but ultimately his injury that he suffered in last week's game proved too much for him, and Brenham had to rely on other members of the roster step up, and they did in a big way.
The Cubs got the scoring started with a 74-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Harvey to Cartelle Brown, and Bleu Cienega kicked the extra point to give Brenham the early 7-0 advantage with 11:11 left in the first quarter.
Liberty Hill responded with a two-yard touchdown run by Dylan Belinga and an extra point from Karson Bye to tie it and 7-7 with 9:56 left to play in the first quarter.
Both defenses then stiffened up and did not allow any more scores until the second quarter. Harvey found Brown on a 23-yard touchdown pass. After Liberty Hill jumped offsides on the extra point try, Brenham went for the two-point conversion, which was scored on a run by Xyran Upshaw. That put the Cubs back up 15-7 with 11:52 to go until the half.
Kyle May would get Liberty Hill into the end zone with 45 seconds left in the second quarter, and Bye added the extra point to cut the Brenham lead to 15-14 going into the locker room at halftime.
The Panthers would take the lead on a pair of field goals from Bye in the third quarter. He kicked a 20-yarder at 7:41, and a 23-yarder at 2:39. That gave Liberty Hill a 20-15 lead going into the final 12 minutes of play.
Brenham opened the fourth quarter with a 20-yard touchdown run by Upshaw, and then added the two point conversion on a pass from Harvey to Chris Guidry to put the Cubs back in front 23-20 with 11:58 left in the game.
Jabreon Moore intercepted a pass from Liberty Hill's Jack Pitchford on the Panthers' ensuing drive. Brenham, then, took it down the field and scored on a two-yard run by Upshaw. Cienega added the extra point to give the Cubs a 30-20 lead with 5:12 left.
The Panthers came back with a touchdown on a three yard run by Preston Benefield, and Bye added the extra point to cut the Brenham lead to 30-27 with 2:28 left.
Liberty Hill went for the onside kick, but it was recovered by Brenham, and the Cubs were able to run the clock out and get the win.
Next up, Brenham will face former district foe, Richmond Randle, who crushed Elgin 79-0 last (Friday) night, in the Region Semifinals. The game will be next Saturday at 2pm at Daikin Stadium in Waller.
