SEVERAL SEATS UP FOR ELECTION ON BRENHAM & BURTON CITY COUNCILS & SCHOOL BOARDS, BLINN BOARD

This spring has the potential to be a very busy election season in Washington County.

Candidate filing opens on Wednesday for positions on the Brenham City Council and Brenham School Board, Burton City Council and Burton School Board, and Blinn Board of Trustees.  Each entity has multiple seats up for election on Saturday, May 3rd.

The Brenham City Council has four positions with terms expiring this year.  Those are the seats of Ward 1 Councilmember Shannan Canales; Ward 3 Councilmember Dr. Paul LaRoche III, who won a special election in 2023 after Atwood Kenjura declared a run for mayor; At-Large Position 5 Councilmember Clint Kolby; and At-Large Position 6 Councilmember Leah Cook.

For the Brenham School Board, three seats will be open for filing.  They include Position 5, held by Tommie Sullivan; Position 6, held by Natalie Lange; and Position 7, held by Jared Krenek.

Three seats will also be open on the Burton City Council, including for Mayor Karen Buck, Position 1 – Nathan Kalkhake and Position 4 – Paul McLaughlin.

The Burton School Board has two expiring terms, as the seats of Jeff Harmel and Demetrius Colvin Sr. will be up for election.

All three at-large seats on the Blinn Board of Trustees will appear on the ballot.  Position 1 is held by Richard O’Malley, who was appointed to complete the term of Charles Moser.  Positions 2 and 3 are held respectively by Jim Kolkhorst and Dennis Crowson.

In addition to the council and board elections, two other elections could be held at the same time.  The Brenham City Council is expected to vote in the near future on calling a city charter amendment election, while Washington County Commissioners will hold a public hearing and vote on Tuesday to possibly call an election for the creation of an emergency services district for the Chappell Hill and Meyersville Volunteer Fire Departments.

Filing for a place on the general election ballot will be open from Wednesday, January 15th to Friday, February 14th.  February 14th is also the last day to order an election.  The last day to register to vote is Thursday, April 3rd, and early voting will be held between Monday, April 21st and Tuesday, April 29th.
