PUBLIC HEARING SET FOR CREATION OF PECAN GLEN ROAD DISTRICT

The public will soon have the opportunity to comment on the potential creation of a new road district in Washington County.

At their meeting this (Tuesday) morning, Washington County Commissioners set a public hearing for December 22nd at 9 a.m. at the Washington County Courthouse Annex to further discuss the establishment of the Pecan Glen Road District.

The proposed district is located within the Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) of the City of Brenham on approximately 138 acres between Old Mill Creek Road and FM 389.  It would cover roads in the Pecan Glen subdivision including Desirable Circle, Success Court, Pecan Glen Road, and Stuart Road.

The purpose of the proposed district is to issue no more than $950,000 in bonds for constructing, acquiring, improving, maintaining and operating roads.  Any bonds issued by the district would be paid through ad valorem taxes levied on all taxable property within the district; only homeowners in the district would be taxed.

Commissioner Joy Fuchs said citizens have tried for years to improve the condition of the roads in the subdivision, but the roads were kept private by the developer.  Commissioner Kirk Hanath said homeowners have pursued several different avenues to improve road conditions, and that this was their “last resort, of sorts.”  He said this district should provide them with some resolution.

The roads within the district will remain private until the court takes them in as county roads, once they are brought up to county specifications.  Commissioner Candice Bullock said that will probably take about two years.

Also at today’s meeting, commissioners:

  • Approved the purchase of a Kohler outdoor natural gas generator for Washington County EMS Station No. 1. The generator was purchased from Zenith Power Systems of Brenham for $32,813.97.
  • Approved an interlocal agreement between the county and Regional Public Defender Office (RPDO) Local Government Corporation. RPDO will provide qualified legal defense teams to represent indigent capital murder defendants in the county.
  • Approved payment to the Texas Hotel and Lodging Association out of the Hotel Occupancy Tax fund.
  • Approved formal notice for utility installation for a two-inch road bore at 8300 Somerville Terrace Lane in Precinct Three.
  • Heard a series of monthly reports from the Information Technology Department, the Emergency Management Coordinator, Environmental Health Department, district and county clerks, justices of the peace, auditor, tax assessor/collector, treasurer, and constables.
