BLINN HOSTS MORE THAN 500 FFA STUDENTS AND INSTRUCTORS
Blinn College and the Agricultural Sciences Department recently hosted more than 500 Agricultural Science (FFA) instructors and students on the Brenham Campus.
The FFA Area III Mid-Winter Conference attracted approximately 365 instructors for training relating to the agricultural industry and student success tactics.
“There are things that change daily in the agriculture industry, and any training that instructors can get is beneficial,” said Allen Kaminsky, FFA Area III Coordinator. “Blinn has been a great partner and we couldn’t do this without the faculty and staff bending over backwards for us.”
The Area III FFA also held an Elite Conference for students entitled “Building Champions in Leadership.” The conference consists of workshops designed to enhance the leadership capabilities of FFA students.
“The Elite Conference teaches students the responsibilities of being a leader,” said Zach Zahradnik, Area III FFA leadership coordinator and former Blinn student. “If we don’t develop our great leaders, then we will miss out on their leadership.”
Students participated in workshops discussing empowering others, secrets to achieving, and goal setting during the Elite Conference. The FFA events are just part of a busy two weeks for the department.
On Monday, Jan. 9, Blinn hosted a prescribed burn workshop put on by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. On Saturday, Jan. 14, a 4-H conference was held at Blinn, training parents and students about feeding and showing different types of livestock. On Jan. 20-21, Blinn teamed with Texas Farm Bureau and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to host training for up to 200 volunteers. The volunteers direct tours for elementary school children and need to know the basic facts about beef cattle, poultry, and swine so they can answer questions.
“We strongly support hosting these activities at Blinn,” said Doug Pierce, Agriculture Professor. “These are valuable educational events that provide great recruiting opportunities for the Blinn Agricultural Sciences Program.”
