NAVASOTA AUTHORITIES ARREST SUSPECT IN STRING OF VEHICLE THEFTS

A suspect has been arrested in connection to the recent vehicle burglaries in Navasota.

Jakelgein Walter
(Grimes Co. Jail)

Authorities say 17-year-old Jakelgein Walter, of Navasota, was the driver of a black Avenger, said to have been stolen from Navasota.

Police Chief Shawn Myatt said that last Wednesday, a Grimes County Sheriff’s deputy attempted a traffic stop on the Avenger, later discovered to be driven by Walter, who sped off and led officers on a pursuit. The chase ended on County Road 309, near State Highway 105.

Police say juveniles from Navasota and Hempstead were present in the vehicle, but due to their ages no names were released.

Walter was recently arrested on November 13th by Bryan police for evading arrest.  He was out on $5,000 bond from the Brazos County Jail, when Grimes County Sheriff’s deputies arrested him.

Walter is currently in the Grimes County Jail on $15,000 bond for two charges: a third-degree felony charge of Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, and a state jail felony charge of Evading Arrest or Detention with a Vehicle.

Myatt said two separate groups are believed to be responsible for the recent car thefts in the area. A second group is said to be breaking into locked vehicles and hotwiring them, looking to transport them for part salvage.

Saturday, officers were sent out to United Ag and Turf on State Highway 6 in Navasota, to a report of suspicious activity. Upon arrival, they found a truck in the yard with the engine running.  Police say a search of the area led to the discovery of multiple vehicles that were broken into and attempted to be hotwired. No property was reported stolen at that time.

These thefts are all part of an ongoing investigation by Navasota police. Anyone with information is asked to call them at 936-825-6124.
