BRENHAM PLANNING AND ZONING TO MULL NEW MONUMENT SIGNAGE ALLOWANCES

The Brenham Planning and Zoning Commission will meet tomorrow (Tuesday) to consider allowing signs placed by school or government entities for public facilities in the B-1 Zoning District.

During the City of Brenham’s ongoing review of its sign ordinance, staff received feedback that entry monument signage may be appropriate as the primary use of a non-residential property.

For example, signs showing entry into Washington County, the City of Brenham and Blinn College District could be allowed on vacant property owned by those agencies in the B-1 (Local Business/Residential Mixed Use) District.

Staff recommend approval of the motion, saying allowing these groups to place monument signs on vacant property could “help establish a sense of place and distinguish arrival to otherwise unseen boundaries”.

The Commission will also review the proposed sign ordinance, in full. The city most recently met Thursday to continue talks on an ordinance update, with the city council and Planning and Zoning Commission offering feedback.  Following review, the city council will consider adoption of the ordinance on June 6th and 20th.

Commissioners will also consider a preliminary and final plat of the Market Square Brenham subdivision, along with a preliminary and final plat of the Farm Houses of Pleasant Hill subdivision. The Farm Houses of Pleasant Hill is a six-acre development southwest of the intersection at Pleasant Hill School Road and Highway 36 South, while Market Square Brenham is located in the 2400 block of South Market Street.

Commissioners will meet tomorrow afternoon at 5:15 p.m., at City Hall.
