CANALES, COOK, KENJURA, KOLBY SWORN IN TO BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL

Today (Thursday) marked the start of a new era for the Brenham City Council.

New faces fill the seats of three city council positions, and all three newcomers were sworn in at today’s council meeting after winning last week’s election: Shannan Canales, Leah Cook, and Atwood Kenjura.

Canales takes the Ward 1 council seat of Keith Herring, who had been on the council since 2004.  Cook and Kenjura fill the respective At-Large Position 6 and Ward 3 seats of Susan Cantey and Andrew Ebel, neither of whom sought re-election.  Cantey began her time on the council in 2017, while Ebel served from 1992 through 2004 and was re-elected in 2007.

Also sworn in today was returning At-Large Position 5 councilmember Clint Kolby, who has served on the council since being appointed after a special election in 2018.  Kolby will now also serve as Mayor Pro Tem after the council chose to elect him for the role.  Canales made a motion to elect Kenjura as Mayor Pro Tem, but the motion died for lack of a second.

Shannan Canales (left) is sworn in to the Ward 1 Brenham City Council seat by former Brenham Mayor and Washington County Judge Dorothy Morgan.
Leah Cook (left) is sworn in by Brenham Mayor Milton Tate to the At-Large Position 6 council seat.
Atwood Kenjura (left) receives the oath of office for Ward 3 councilmember from Brenham Mayor Milton Tate.
Clint Kolby (left) takes the oath of office for the At-Large Position 5 council seat from Washington County Court-at-Law Judge Eric Berg. Kolby was also elected as Mayor Pro Tem.

  1. Congrats to the new council members, now remember why we elected you; to clean up the mess at City Hall. I promised I would not vote for any incumbent council member and I can honestly say that I did not. I, along with other voters, voted for change,. It is time to end the era of The Great Garbage debacle, mysterious terminations of long term city employees, big spending, and the complete lack of transparency that we see coming from our city government. New council members, I think you have a firm mandate to make major changes at City Hall to ensure that the citizens of Brenham are represented by our council, not just seen as bother to be ignored like the previous council seemed to do. We want our City Manager and our city employees to be working for us, not just their personal agenda.
